Award-winning composer Gillian Rae Perry's most ambitious and emotionally rich album, titled "gilly’s garden", blends heartfelt songwriting with elements of contemporary classical music, featuring 15 tracks totaling about 55 minutes. The album represents a daring evolution in Perry's musical style, breaking away from traditional genres to explore new sounds.
Recorded in Pasadena, California, the album marks a reunion with Richard An, a composer and performer who has been a close collaborator and friend since their time studying together at CalArts. Their strong musical connection is evident throughout the record, which was made possible by funding from New Music USA. The result is a beautifully crafted collection of sounds that feels both polished and natural, offering a structured experience while also inviting exploration.
"gilly’s garden" feels like stepping into a carefully designed yet wild inner landscape. Perry’s songwriting combines elements of traditional music with modern classical influences, allowing melodies to blossom against ever-changing backgrounds and intricate rhythms. The addition of the local percussion gives the album a lively energy, adding a physical touch to the more abstract parts of the music.
Highlighted tracks like “gilly’s garden,” “drain,” and “everyone is everything” display the album's emotional depth and variety. The title track unfolds gently, like a vine growing slowly but steadily. In contrast, “drain” creates a feeling of tension and release. At the same time, “everyone is everything” shifts into a broader, almost cosmic reflection on community and connection, blending individual voices into a harmonious whole.
