Dan Snaith, a Canadian producer better known as Daphni, is back with two new songs ahead of his album "Butterfly," which will come out through Jiaolong. "Talk To Me" is the better of the two. It shows that minimalism can be just as powerful as maximalism.
Snaith calls "Good Night Baby" a "big mushy loved up track with all the feels, but "Talk To Me" is the exact opposite. Snaith strips his production down to the basics, wubs, drums, scattered voices, and soft synth melodies. The effect is more thrilling than overwhelming, it's a rhythmic pulse that feels big and planned. The track really comes to life when you play it on a big sound system, showing that sometimes less is more.
Here, you can really see how Snaith can switch between extremes. On one hand, he can turn a song from a sparse start into a lush, emotional journey, and on the other hand, he can make something simple but powerful. "Talk To Me" doesn't overwhelm your ears, instead, it draws you in with its simple layers and no extra noise. Daphni easily finds the right balance between closeness and control.
"Talk To Me" gives fans a taste of the album's careful duality, songs that can go from sweet and wide to thrilling and straightforward. This thoughtful lack of sound showcases Snaith's production skills and, once again, why he is one of electronic music's most creative architects.
